Safe_Routes to SchoolLast June the City of Plymouth was notified by INDOT that they had been awarded a $329,962 Safe Routes to School grant for Baker Street between Columbus Drive and Randolph Street.  The city’s portion of the project, 20% will be nearly $66,000.

Seven companies were hopeful in being selected for the project design and in the end The Troyer Group was selected.

During Tuesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting, City Engineer Rick Gaul presented the 33% plans asking members to note any additional improvements or changes.  Gaul noted that a crosswalk between the high school parking lot and the soccer complex may not fit into the Feds plan because Safe Routes to School grants are for transportation to elementary and middle schools, junior highs.  The grant also allows for routes between schools, to libraries, Boys and Girls Clubs and other similar programs.

The City Engineer also presented a request from United Telephone to place fiber-optic in the city’s right-of-way on Miller Drive, Pioneer Drive and Gary Drive to provide service to 3M.  Although the Board of Public Works and Safety approved the request, Gaul said on Friday they had it a water-main when they failed to pot-hole the project.  He noted that the company has financial responsibility for the repairs.
