Head_2013This year the General Assembly worked to support students with dyslexia, which is a reading and learning disorder that affects 20 percent of American students.

One of the challenges of dyslexia is that it can be tricky to diagnose because poor reading and writing skills are often mistaken for other disabilities. Teachers are frequently unable to identify and distinguish dyslexia, resulting in students being wrongly placed in remedial classes.

State Senator Randy Head said, “To address this challenge, I voted in favor of a new law that will assist students with dyslexia and help our teachers better identify the disorder.”

House Enrolled Act 1108 defines “dyslexia” in state statute and encourages the Indiana Department of Education to help teachers better recognize students with dyslexia. Once those students are identified, they will receive the necessary tools to help them succeed in their studies.
