South Bend Motor SpeedwayOn Friday the South Bend Motor Speedway announced on their website that they are closing.

Steve Brown said in his post, “As most of you know, the racing surface at the speedway is in rough shape. While over the last 5 years it was always kinda rough, we have always been able to patch the holes and maintain a safe racing surface for the competitors and fans. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to say this is the case as the surface is giving up everywhere and giving up fast.”

Steve and Jen Brown said, “We have done a tremendous amount of soul searching over the past few weeks as we debated our options for re-surfacing. Sadly, the reality became very clear and simply put, our hearts are just no longer in it.”

The speedway will remain open in 2016 for three demolition derbies, which will allow paying the taxes and insurance while they try and sell the facility to someone. The post stated, “Racing on a weekly basis is not a safe option simply because the surface is falling apart, anyone who has raced on it lately knows this all too well.”
