Tuesday night’s Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals meeting was standing room only.  The full house was for the request to permit a kennel operation as a special use in the Commercial-3 zoning district at 2154 Oak Drive, the former Banfitch Furniture building.

The Truth about dogsStephanie O’Dell, the owner of The Truth About Dogs told members of the Plymouth BZA that she has outgrown her current facility on Redwood Road and wants to move into the 12,200 square foot building.  Her presentation included detailing services offered including training, boarding and daycare.  She anticipates expanding services to include feline boarding, a retail space and in the next 2 to 3 years adding small animal veterinary services.

PlymouthBZA_Truth about dogs_2O’Dell told BZA members that training takes place inside.  Clients will bring their dogs for various training classes, boarding or daycare services will entering through the front parking lot area.  Dogs will be put outside to do their business on a regular schedule but a supervised the entire time.  Stephanie proposes to place an 8 foot privacy fence on the rear paved area with ten individual 5 foot high chain-link fence play areas 15 feet wide and 26 feet long.

Some of the requirements considered along with the fencing include noise.  O’Dell used a meter to determine the current level of noise from the grocery store, motel, and industrial compared to the noise at her current facility.  The decibels registered more than 20 decibels higher at the proposed location than at her current location.

After more than an hour of discussion, the reading of 14 letters of support and 1 letter of opposition and opening the floor for public comment where 6 spoke the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously approved the request to permit an 8 foot high wooden privacy fence and the kennel as a special use in the C3 zoning.

Building owner Chris Miller noted that the building has been vacant since June 2009.
