LJH 3Lincoln High School’s Clint Watts and his Introduction to Agriculture students gave a presentation in front of the Plymouth Community School Board last week for the “Spotlight on Learning” segment.

One question they students answered for board members was: Do you know how much it would cost to use a 100-watt light bulb for 10 hours here in Plymouth? The students explained how they calculated that exact equation.

LJHS 2The idea behind the course is to get the kids introduced to all the opportunities they will have at the high school. Watts teaches small segments of a several topics, such as… Animal Science, Plant Science, Leadership, Careers, FFA, Ag Business, and the list goes on.

At the school board meeting the student’s focus was mainly on Agriculture Mechanics. While Watts doesn’t have an industrial shop at the junior high as he does for the classes he teaches at the high school. He said, he came about the lesson because, “I wanted to do some “hands on” shop work to give them an idea of our Agriculture Mechanics course we offer at Plymouth High School.

LJHS 2 LJHS 1He went on to say, “This unit focused on electrical power and how it has changed our world and how it relates to the way production agriculture runs today.” “The students learned how electric is generated, transmitted, and consumed… they also learned how much electricity costs and how to calculate the cost of certain electrical devices,” he continued.

Watts says the “hands on” portion of the unit allowed the students to create electrical circuits and better understand how electrical power works.

Close to 75 students were enrolled in the Introduction to Agriculture class at Lincoln Junior High and he said all of them took part in this lesson.

“They all did fantastic and when they finally tested their walls to see if they worked, it was great to see the feeling of accomplishment on their faces,” Watts said.
