Phone ScamTelephone scams have been a problem in the Starke County area for quite some time. A different type of phone scam has recently been reported to the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Residents have been receiving telephone calls from people claiming to be with software companies. The people inquire on whether or not a person’s computer is operating slowly. They then ask for information in order to gain access to your personal computer. Once access is gained, the caller then has access to any information that may be stored on the computer, including account information and passwords.

Victims have claimed that their cell phones and other electronic devices are being accessed from information that was obtained from their personal computer.

The Starke County Sheriff’s reminds residents: It is important that you do not give anyone access to your computer unless it is done in person by a reputable technician or you’re the person that calls for technical assistance. Do not give anyone access to your electronic devices if they call you to inquire if you are having computer trouble.

Do not give any personal information over the telephone. The IRS will typically send correspondence through the mail or send a representative to meet with you.
