Students in Mrs. Watkins’s sixth grade classroom at Triton Jr. Sr. High School learned about cuneiform writing in Social Studies and what Sumerian cuneiform is. Students integrated art in their lesson studying the ancient Mesopotamian people and the earliest forms of writing.
To get the full experience of what it was like to be a scribe in ancient times each student created a clay tablet and used a toothpick to write their initials in cuneiform on their tablets.
Cuneiform script is one of the oldest known writing forms. The script emerged from 30th century BC and was used simply to write the Sumerian language. Cuneiform writing developed and moved to areas such as the Middle East and Egypt. Each letter in cuneiform is made from wedged-shaped strokes that are inscribed on clay or sometimes other materials such as wax, stone or metal.
