TritonSpanish_Group navy pierThe Triton High School Spanish Club went to Pilsen, Chicago on Friday, March 20th.

Miss Sarah Stockinger, Triton Spanish teacher and club sponsor, drove 10 of her students in a minibus all the way to Chicago where the adventure began. First, they went to visit the Latin Street Dance company where they were taught by professionals how to salsa dance.

Second, they ate at an authentic Mexican restaurant called “Mi Tierra”.  Miss Stockinger had the waiters only speak Spanish to encourage the students to speak Spanish.

Third, the group went to the National Museum of Mexican Art where they were able to learn about some of the indigenous cultures of Mexico and how it is reflected in their artwork. Their favorite piece of art was “Make tacos, not war”.

After this, the students were led on a walking tour by a native speaker in the Pilsen area were they learned about the cultural importance of murals, how graffiti and gang signs are different, and the stories behind it all.

To end the day, the students were given time to explore Navy Pier and then board a Spirit of Chicago cruise boat. This is where Beth Beatty, Keygan Mosier, Lee Mullet, and Allie Ogle won a giant authentic Mexican piñata in the Salsa dance competition! “They slept all the way home, safe and sound!”
