The Annual Veterans Day services was held at the Plymouth High School on Wednesday, November 11th.
Prior to the service at the high school, veterans were invited to attend a free breakfast. Students involved in PHS Student Government had the opportunity to sit down and eat and talk with the veterans, hearing about some of their experiences they had will serving in the military.
Students presented patriotic ribbons to each veteran that attended the breakfast.
Following breakfast, students, staff, administration and the public gathered in the varsity gym. Principal Jim Condon welcomed everyone and thanked the veterans for helping to teach students the significance of Veterans Day. After giving a brief history on Armistice Day and Veterans Day Condon then invited everyone to watch a video featuring President Ronald Regan.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter was the guest speaker for the event. Although he’s not a veteran, his father joined the army at the age of 18 in1943, a month after graduation. Not wanting to speak about the horrors he experienced, Wayne Senter wrote about of some of his memories. Mayor Senter read one such story titled, “A Soldier Comes Home”, detailing his homecoming on a ship past the Statue of Liberty on Christmas day in 1945. He had been gone 2 ½ years in North Africa and Italy without returning home one time.
The PHS Crimson Connection and PHS Wind Ensemble performed during the ceremony and a video created by PHS Senior Brook Wagoner demonstrated what Veterans Day means to students and staff at the school.
The day’s event concluded with an armed forces salute melody featuring all the branches of the service.
