INDOTlogoDrivers across INDOT’s entire Northwest and North-central District should expect to encounter slick conditions on the roads all morning and through the afternoon today. Widespread freezing rain, sleet, and snow have blanketed all 13 counties in our district since early this morning. INDOT has 120+ plow/salt crews on the roads right now, but these conditions are exceptionally tricky. Salt, sand, and other materials can help melt the ice and increase traction, but rain and traffic can result in all of this washing off the road surface.

INDOT crews planned well in advance of this storm by watching multiple statewide and local forecasts, pre-treating roadways with de-icing materials yesterday, and patrolling and watching road sensors last night, before the first snow/rain fell. Dozens of INDOT plow/salt crews hit the road late last night and have been working throughout the early morning hours to keep pavement in the best condition possible.

Plan Ahead: It is extremely important that drivers plan ahead and know what to expect before heading out the door today. Plan extra time for your commute, slow down, brake early, and don’t follow too closely. Don’t wait until your vehicle starts sliding to get the hint to slow down, drive to the conditions on the roads..
