Ancilla graduate, Josh Felty has accepted a position on the staff of U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (R, IN-02) for the summer of 2016.
Felty, a recent graduate of Ancilla College, will further his career with a position as legislative intern for Walorski. Felty, a general studies major at Ancilla, plans on advancing his education at Valparaiso University where he has been accepted to major in pre-law and political science.
Felty said he is especially thankful to Ancilla President Dr. Ken Zirkle who wrote a letter to Walorski on Felty’s behalf. “His letter was very flattering and had everything to do with my getting this opportunity.” Walorski is no stranger to Ancilla College. In the mid-nineties, Walorski was employed by the college as Director of Institutional Advancement and recently spoke at the blessing ceremony for the first of two residence halls built on campus.
Felty is the son of Craig and Trisha Felty of Knox. Craig is a registered nurse and currently working as the CEO of Starke Hospital in Knox and the CNO (Chief Nursing Officer) of Laporte Hospital. Trisha is a home educator, homeschooling 4 kids. Though close to his family, this position will require Felty to reside in Woodbridge, Vir., where he will stay with an Ancilla advisor’s family.
Felty said he knows interning is far from glamorous, but he is looking forward to the experience. “I’ve learned a great deal about some of the political processes in my classes. This gives me the chance to see the processes in action,” he said.
Ancilla College placed many other students into internship positions this summer. Aside from Felty, the following students received work through Ancilla’s placement program: Amber McCarty (Knox), Stark County Chamber of Commerce; Jake Denton (North Judson), Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum; Khadijah Moore (Elkhart), Tolson Community Center; Janessa Salazar (Plymouth), St. Joseph Hospital of Plymouth; Jonathan Moreno (Ligonier) Ligonier Sheriff’s Department; Emily Rogers (Westville), Westville Correctional Facility.
“Criminal Justice and Exercise Science are our biggest users of internships. The Indiana State Police and area sheriff’s offices have all helped us place criminal justice interns. Exercise science students use St. Joseph Med Center and the LifePlex for many of their internships,” said Jim Cawthon, director of career services and program development. Three-hour internships for credit must be at least 135 hours in length (45 hours per credit).
Cawthon said our current economy makes job placement and career readiness and critical component to the college experience.
“Making sure our graduates are qualified for the workforce and have an edge over other candidates is something Ancilla is really good at,” he said, noting than an internship on a student’s resume can be the difference between getting the interview and being ignored.
