Dr. Laura BatesThe Culver-Union Township Public Library is excited to welcome Laura Bates on Monday, May 16th, as a part of the Celebrated Voices Series. The conversation with the Eugene & Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award finalist is part of the Novel Conversations Speakers Program, and is sponsored by Indiana Humanities with support from The Glick Fund, a fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Dr. Laura Bates is the author of Shakespeare Saved My Life and a Professor of English at Indiana State University. For more than twenty-five years she has also taught throughout the Indiana state prison system. She created the world’s first Shakespeare program in supermax—the long-term solitary confinement unit. Her prison work has been featured in local and national media, including two segments on MSNBC-TV’s Lock Up. Copies of Shakespeare Saved My Life are available for checkout in book and audio at the library, and online through OverDrive. This memoir will be enjoyed by adults and young adults alike.

During her visit to Culver, Dr. Bates plans to meet with the Culver Community High School teen book club, which recently received and read copies of Shakespeare Saved My Life, courtesy of the CUTPL Friends of the Library. CUTPL also has the honor of hosting a Symposium with the author during the afternoon for selected classes from the Culver Academies and Culver Community, pending board approval. CUTPL will then be hosting a public conversation with Dr. Bates in the large meeting room at 5:30 PM on May 16th. Refreshments will be served. Your RSVP is kindly requested by May 11th by calling the library at 574-842-2941. This event is free and open to the public.
