Plymouth_Airport_buildingThis week Plymouth Municipal Airport Director, Dave Lattimer appeared before the Plymouth Council.  He told members that since he has been at the helm of the airport for 5 and a half years it’s been the aviation board’s top priority to acquire and install an AWOS system.

After applying to the FFA twice and once to the State of Indiana the aviation board included the automated weather system in this year’s budget.  Bids were opened in March and the aviation board was expected to award the contract to Michiana Contracting during their meeting on Tuesday.

The aviation board awarded the bid of $149,775 to Michiana Contracting.  The system provides pilots with a variety of information, including temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, dew point, visibility, cloud height, and precipitation. It relays data by computer, telephone, and aviation radio.

Currently work on seeking licenses from the FAA and FCC for the new equipment is underway.  It’s anticipated that installation will begin late summer and be functional before the end of the year.
