According to recent news reports, Hoosiers are on pace to more than double the number of phone scam complaints filed with the Indiana Attorney General’s Office compared to last year.
Unfortunately, it’s not just landlines that are being called. Scammers and robocalls are now targeting cell phones as well.
Residents can sign up for the state’s Do Not Call list by visitingwww.IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 1-888-834-9969.
One way to avoid these calls before picking up the phone is recognizing fraudulent phone numbers and area codes, including:
- Non-existent area codes such as “000” and “123”;
- Area codes “202” and “876”;
- Unfamiliar area codes or phone numbers; and
- Generic caller ID names such as “Card Services” or “Home Security.”
