The Bourbon Police Department announced Wednesday the completion of the national and statewide 2016 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement mobilization campaign. During the annual 25-day enforcement period, 34 tickets were written, and 1arrest was made for driving while intoxicated within Bourbon Township.
“Driving sober is driving safe,” said Officer Matt Geiger“Getting behind the wheel intoxicated is not worth a ticket, possible jail time, or your life. This campaign helps reinforce that message and we will continue to work hard until every driver across our state understands the risks of driving impaired.”
Along with the Drunk Driving arrest the Bourbon police arrested two for driving while suspended with a prior conviction, another for never receiving a license and a felony warrant arrest.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2014, an average of one alcohol related driving fatality occurred every 53 minutes. Further, NHTSA statistics show each year on average, more than 10,000 people die on U.S. roadways due to intoxicated driving.
“Our goal has always been, and will continue to be, to reduce the number of intoxicated drivers on Indiana’s roadways,” said ICJI Director Dave Murtaugh. “The dedication of law enforcement all across this state make reaching that goal possible, and I want to thank them for their hard work.”
Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is an annual enforcement effort supported by federal highway safety funding. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute distributes funding to more than 250 participating Indiana law enforcement agencies.
