Members of the Marshall County Council held a brief Budget Work Session on Wednesday morning.
Council president, Judy Stone cautioned member that during a work session no decisions can be made by the council. She also told members they need to cut $1.4 million from the advertised General Fund budget of $13,477,729.
The county’s new health insurance provider will reduce next year’s premiums by $142,000.
Julie Fox, the County Auditor said the Life Insurance premium remained steady along with no changes for the Dental Insurance and the Disability Insurance stayed the same.
The Auditor also informed council members that revenues are only up $12,033 this year which actually puts them below last year’s adopted budget.
Council member Jon Van Vactor said, “We really need to look at a good raise for the employees because we haven’t given employees a good raise the last few years.”
Stone said, “I have three goals, raises, highway and economic development, while still maintaining an excellent level of service to the county.”
Next Monday the County Council will spend the day tackling budget cuts of $1.4 million in the General Fund during a public meeting that begins at 9 a.m. in the 2nd floor meeting room of the County Building.
