PLYMOUTH – The role of hero is becoming appealing to Cam Eveland.

For the second night in a row the Plymouth senior hit a walk off single to give Plymouth’s Pilgrims a key NLC win, Friday night over Concord by a final of 3-2.

“He’s at the right spot at the right time and you just do your job when you’re up there,” said Plymouth head coach Ryan Wolfe. “He’s had a great couple of days here overall at the plate. I know he had a rough stretch there he’s really found himself and really relaxed and done what he’s capable of. It’s tough to fight out of it when your struggling but he’s had a great night both nights.”

“Hitting is confidence and it’s contagious. We’ve been trying to get him some confidence and he’s had a good approach at the plate, we can’t say enough about him.”

Down a run in the seventh Eveland led off that inning with a single and later scored on a Jeremy Drudge sacrifice fly to tie the game. In the eighth his single to center would be – for a second straight night – the game winning hit.

Plymouth starter Braydon Davidson had another masterful start taking a no hitter into the fourth inning and scattering five Concord hits, giving up two unearned runs and striking out five and not walking a hitter.

“He was great he had all three pitches working tonight,” said Wolfe. “He’s our horse and I had Drudge warmed up but it would have been tough to take him out there if we hadn’t scored. He was at 93 pitches and we might have gone with him one more inning. He’s our guy. He’s our number one, and when he’s on the mound we know we have a chance to win.”

“His change up is devastating, especially with their left handers in the line up he got them to swing over the top of it. I could tell he felt good tonight, it was warm out, he had a good warm up and he had his good stuff out there tonight.”

As good as he was Davidson needed help to get his fifth win on the year from the Plymouth bats. For the second night in a row the Pilgrims struggled a bit in the field with two costly errors.

“We don’t want to make errors and give them bases,” said Wolfe. “They had a couple of freebies an error a hit batter and it got coupled with a run. We’ve got to put that behind us and we’ve can’t have mental lapses but we’ve got to have short term memory. It’s something you fight through. It’s not too concerning. We’ve got guys in positions where they’ve made plays. We need to fight through it.”

Pending the outcome of Friday’s games the Pilgrims could find themselves in a game for first place in the NLC on Monday at Warsaw. They stand at 11-5 and 6-3 in the NLC.

Saturday the Pilgrims will host their annual tourney with some of the top teams in northern Indiana taking part in Fort Wayne Carroll, Western and Penn. Plymouth takes on Carroll at 11 a.m and Penn will face off with Western after that. The winners will meet for the championship at 6:30 p.m with the losers playing the consolation game before that.
