MIller's_New Year Nutrition_JanuaryMiller’s Assisted Living is offering a brand new monthly event that is open to the public.  In connection with Saint Joseph Health System Outreach Services, the second Wednesday of each month through 2016 you are invited to attend “For Your Health” at 2:30 p.m. at Miller’s.  Miller’s is located at 625 Oakhill Ave. in Plymouth.

Community Outreach Coordinator, Deborah Berger BSN, RN and Senior Services Navigator, John Bruinsma joined together on Wednesday, January 13th to present New Year Nutrition.  They shared a myriad of information concerning proper food choices, use of spices rather than condiments and they had much to say about portion sizes.

The food pyramid is gone!  The balanced plate is now being used to teach about portion control.  The most intriguing information had to do with portion sizes and they gave a handout that helped determine how much food you should have on your plate.  If you can visualize, you can control the portion sizes on your plate.  Here is an example:  Visualize a deck of cards.  That equals 3 ounces of meat or poultry.  Visualize a baseball and that equals 1 cup of salad greens.   For further examples go to www.myplate.gov.

Drinking plenty of water is also another important factor in good nutrition and health.  Staying hydrated is a must.

“If you are feeling thirsty,” stated Bruinsma, “you have waited to long and you are dehydrated.”

“You can never drink too much water,” added Berger.

The three tips Berger left the group with was:  Balance different types of food, stay hydrated and keep active.  She suggested walking as the best for of exercise.

Berger will be back at Miller’s Assisted Living on Wednesday, February 10th at 2:30 p.m.  For Your Health will feature Heart Healthy Habits.  February is Heart Health month and everyone is encouraged to wear red to this event.  For more information call 936-9801 and ask for Anna Corbett.
