CLERMONT, FLORIDA – The Ancilla College softball team lost two games on the first day of action during their spring trip to Clermont, Florida. The Chargers opened up by losing to Waubonsee Community College 10-0 in five innings and then lost to Iowa Lakes Community College 2-1 in the second game.

Ancilla (2-4) was held to just one hit in game one, a one out single by Kelsie West in the top of the fifth inning, breaking up 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball by Waubonsee’s Ashley Jourdan. Maggie Birch reached base in both of her plate appearances by walk and Brittany Probasco reached on a walk in the fourth inning. Allena McElfresh threw one inning of shutout relief, as well.

The Chargers were held to just four hits in their second game of the day. The big one was a two out double from Probasco that plated Birch in the top of the third, which at the time tied the game. Probasco ended the game with two hits. Birch and starting pitcher Lauren Prohl each had one. Prohl allowed just one earned run in five innings of work, while striking out five. McElfresh again picked up an inning of shutout relief, adding one strikeout to her line.

“We had way too many mistakes today to earn a win,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “There were as many mental errors as there were physical errors. Thankfully tomorrow is another day and I expect more from this team as the week progresses.”

Ancilla takes on Dakota County Technical College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. followed by a matchup against Madison Area Technical College at 3:00 p.m.
