CLERMONT, FLORIDA – The Ancilla College softball team fell in late night action in two games. In game one, the Chargers lost to Madison Area Technical College 4-0. In their second game, Ancilla was defeated by Iowa Lakes Community College in eight innings by a score of 5-3.
Ancilla (4-6) was held to just four hits in game one including two from Melia Gonzalez. Maggie Birch and starting pitcher Lauren Prohl each added one. Prohl, whose record moves to 3-5 on the season, allowed three runs in five innings of work while striking out just one.
The Chargers dropped their second game of the night in a rematch against Iowa Lakes Community College. Ancilla fell behind 3-0 before picking up three of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Morgan Lippens reached base on an error and was thrown out trying to steal second, Allena McElfresh followed up with a walk. Abbey Renner then singled to center, moving McElfresh to second. Brittany Probasco loaded the bases with a single of her own before Tehya Henry doubled to score McElfresh and Renner. Brooke Stout tied the game up when she plated Probasco on an infield ground out, but Henry was left stranded at third. After a scoreless seventh, Iowa Lakes took advantage of a couple of clutch doubles and the international tie breaker rule to take a 5-3 lead that Ancilla was unable to cut into in their half of the eighth. Renner and Probasco ended the game with two hits each. Renner pitched all eight innings with her record dropping to 1-1. She allowed just three earned runs and struck out just two.
“This was a disappointing evening to say the least,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “I felt that both of these games were in reach, but we just couldn’t get over the hump with the clutch hit or defensive play. These are two solid teams. The key for us is to bounce back in our four remaining games this weekend.”
