LJH_ND_Girls2016_1Seventeen Lincoln Jr. High School girls attended the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Career Conference for girls in grades six through eight at The University of Notre Dame’s Jordan Hall of Science on Saturday. The day-long event included hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Girls attended three, interest-based workshops from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with young ladies from other Michiana schools.

Lincoln Junior High’s seventh grade student Anna Satorius, interested in animal sciences, said her favorite workshop was “An Insect Sensation”. Anna talked about learning that insects have senses and instincts, something she had never thought about before. In the workshop, girls saw how mosquitoes respond to color when laying eggs and how cockroaches seek out darkly lit spaces over lighter areas.

LJH_ND_Girls2016_2Eighth grade student Alexa Orozco, had the chance to pet Francois, a Madagascar hissing cockroach. The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 2 to 3 inches at maturity. They are native to the island of Madagascar, which is off the African mainland.

Students interested in cyber security and computer science, attended a workshop titled “Where’s Wanda?” Eighth grade student Andie Kizer, said this workshop as her favorite. She also said that she had no idea that any post made online can be used to track individuals. In the workshop, students were tasked with identifying various individuals based on their Internet activity.

LJH_ND_Girls2016_3While Lincoln Jr. High girls had a lot of fun throughout the day, they left the conference with a better understanding of different career opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
