FluorideThe question on the safety of fluoride in the City of Plymouth’s water system was brought to Monday night’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting by local Dentist Tom Pedavoli.

Last week a South Bend resident approached the board promoting the dangers of fluoridation and this week Pedavoli gave the other side of the story.

The safety of effectives of the fluoridation of water for preventing dental decay has been extensively studied by many and the overwhelming evidence indicated that the fluoridation of water is both safe and effective according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

Organizations who support the fluoridation of municipal water is supported by the American Dental Association, Center for Disease Control, American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics the U.S. Surgeon General and many others.

Fluoridation exists naturally in virtually all water supplies.  In the city of Plymouth it’s about .1 part per-million which the recommendation is .7 parts per-million.  The City of Plymouth supplements the natural fluoridation being it up to the recommended amount.

Councilman Jeff Houin conducted his own research on the subject and said, “I would not support termination of fluoridation in the city water.”

The Board of Public Works and Safety took no action.
