Pathfinder Services at 113 Water Street approached the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety Monday night seeking a handicap access point at their new offices across from River Park Square.
The representatives said there are ramps at both ends of the block but their clientele may encounter issues having to walk that far when the winter weather comes.
When the city redesigned the streetscape with the park project building owner, Jim Vinall asked to have the handicap access point moved to the ends of the block instead of in front of his building according to Councilman Mike Delp.
Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt said an ADA compliant ramp would require so much space that a parking space may be lost.
City Engineer Rick Gaul said it would be difficult to place an ADA compliant ramp in the middle of the block. He said survey work would have to be completed and an ADA compliant ramp designed.
Delp said, “We are sensitive to your needs, but I’m not sure it could be done this fall,” noting not only time is an issue but funding.
When the representatives from Pathfinders suggested putting in a temporary ramp the question arose as to who would assume the liability. Snow removal could also be an issue with the temporary ramp.
The Board of Public Works and Safety took no action and will look at an alternative solution. As well, Pathfinders should come back to the board with a more detailed proposal.
