Northern Indiana Dairy Tour

The Northern Indiana Dairy Trail continues this weekend with open houses this Saturday.

The trail offers a look at modern milk production and features farm tours, historical displays, children’s activities and dairy product tastings. The farm tours are led by hard-working dairy farmers, who will answer questions on topics such as animal care, farmers’ community involvement, the environment, and family farming.

The six-county region of Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Noble and St. Joseph has more dairy farms than any other region of the state, and volunteers want to recognize the important contributions of dairy farming to the local economy and to create opportunities for dairy farmers to interact directly with consumers.

In Marshall County the Homestead Dairy with 3,400 cows located at 11505 13th Road in Plymouth will be open to the public. Hosts for the open house tour are Floyd and Deb Houin, Tana Houin, Brian Houin, Matt Houin, Joel Gawronski and Ryan Rogers. Brian Houin was the 2013 Young Dairy Producer of the Year.

Ted and Karyn Hesters at 72335 Walnut Road in Walkerton, and Milk Quality Awards winners will open their operation for the public to visit.

The open houses run from noon to 5 p.m and at each stop along the dairy trail, visitors will enjoy free milk and yogurt.
