The Plymouth Park Department will host their first bus trip of the new year on Monday, January 25th. The trip will include a tour of the Albanese Candy Factory in Merrillville and a lunch at Portillo’s.
Every year, people from all over the country come to learn about the process of making the “World’s Best Gummies” and chocolates. What makes Albanese unique is that they are the only candy company that offers a public tour for gummi manufacturing in the USA. You’ll get to view the candy factory through eight separate windows and see two videos explaining the creation of gummies and one video featuring their Gold Label Chocolates.
The guided tour provides an introduction to the company, explains the machinery used to create the gummies, and an opportunity to sample both gummies and chocolates. Typically a guided tour takes 30 minutes.
Lunch at Portillo’s is another unique experience. Portillo’s is an American restaurant chain that specializes in serving Chicago-style food. The company was founded by Dick Portillo in 1963 in Villa Park, Illinois under the name The Dog House. Portillo’s is located primarily in the Chicago metropolitan area, and also has two locations in southern California and another two locations in Arizona.
The cost for the Plymouth Park Department bus trip is $3.00 for city residents and $5.00 for non-residents. Lunch is on your own and generally will cost from $8 to $15.
