StateNewsThe Indiana General Assembly is now in the second half of the 2016 legislative session. Of the bills that passed the Senate in the first half, 61 percent passed with unanimous support, and 95 percent passed with bipartisan support.

The Senate is now considering legislation from the House of Representatives. Some of the noteworthy bills include:

  • House Bill 1002, would establish a $7,500-per-year college scholarship for top Hoosier high school graduates who commit to teaching in Indiana for at least five years;
  • House Bill 1004, would make it easier for out-of-state teachers to teach in Indiana and give school districts the ability to provide supplemental pay for teachers in hard-to-fill positions;
  • House Bill 1019, would address public access to police body camera videos; and
  • House Bill 1235, would establish mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of dealing meth, cocaine or narcotic drugs.
