Winter weather+As of 3:30 pm Eastern Time: Heavy snow continues to fall across the entire Northwest District of INDOT, with strong winds causing blowing and drifting snow. Already 3”-6” of snow has fallen in much of our 13 county district. All roads should be considered slick and snow-covered. The snow is falling at such a rate that despite a full callout of plow/salt crews, drivers should expect difficult driving conditions.

All counties in the Northwest District are under some form of travel advisory, which is determined by the counties themselves. All but two counties in our district (Fulton, Cass), have reached at least Orange Level, which only allows for essential travel. Jasper and White Counties are under the highest level, Red, which only allows for emergency vehicles to be on the roads. Drivers can be ticketed for violating Travel Advisories. Stay off the roads: This is a dangerous storm and all drivers are strongly encouraged to stay home. Already this afternoon we’re hearing of vehicles stuck in the snow on some state roads in the district. This is dangerous for drivers and also prevents INDOT plow crews from clearing the roads. In addition, due to the heavy wet snow and strong winds some traffic signals are being partially-covered and difficult to see.

If you must drive, slow down, don’t follow too closely, brake early, and drive to the conditions on the roads. It is unsafe to travel the speed limit in conditions like these. Please give our INDOT crews plenty of room to work on the roads.
