PHS_State Debate and Congress Finals 2016Last weekend, Plymouth High School hosted the Northwest Indiana NSDA National Qualification tournament. Two PHS students qualified to compete at the national tournament in Salt Lake City in June. Senior Emily McKenzie and junior Garrett Garver defeated 61 other students in the House of Representatives to earn their spots.

Freshmen Trent McKenzie and Nicole Keller are alternates to the tournament as well.  Trent finished 3rd in the Senate and is the 1st alternate. Nicole finished 6th in the House and is the 3rd alternate.  Freshman Samantha Zechiel also advanced into the top eighteen and competed in the Super House.  Emily McKenzie, Trent McKenzie, and Jack Garner all earned presiding officers’ gavels with Emily being voted outstanding Presiding Officer by the students at the tournament.

Additionally, the speech team competed in the PHS Blizzardfest / Snowmageddon Invitational over the weekend.  Several students finished in the top three in their events.  Champions included Meghan Egierski and James Doody in Scripted Duo as well as Morgan Espich in Declamation.  Second place finishes included Andrew Haines and Katy Smith in Memorized Duo, Lexi Ramirez in Prose, and Yailin Rodriguez in Poetry.  Finishing 3rd were Bridget Schafer in Humor, Jillian Smith in Original Oratory, and Rodriguez in Programmed Oral Interp.  A complete list of finishes by PHS speakers – including those from the PHS Blizzardfest / Snowmageddon tournament – can be found by scrolling down to the tournament results for this season at http://www.speechwire.com/r-team.php?teamid=331&seasonid=8
