The First United Church of Christ, 321 North Center Street in Plymouth, beginning January 10th, plans to provide breakfast at 10:00 a.m. each week as a part of their Sunday morning schedule. To conserve energy costs, the congregation will be holding a “cozier” worship service in a space smaller than the 150-year-old sanctuary. Since the location will be less formal, leaders suggested including a “Church Café” approach between the Sunday School experience and worship. The goal is to feed folks both spiritually and physically during the cold, dark winter months.
“We would like everyone to feel welcome and nourished when they come to church,” said Pastor AnnMarie Kneebone, who has served this historic Plymouth congregation since 2010. “Having a full, hot breakfast helps young families with small children as well as the elderly who often dine alone,” she explained. Church members and small groups will take turns preparing the meals on Sunday morning.
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the morning, beginning with the “All Saints Sunday School” at 9:15. The theme for Epiphany will be “Unpacking for the Journey” introducing stress-reducing techniques and activities for all ages. Participants also may choose to show up at 10:00 to eat and stay for worship that begins at 10:45. “If folks would like, they can even finish their coffee around tables during the worship time. I’m fine with that,” said the pastor.
The Church Café will be open to members and visitors alike through Easter. At that time the leadership will evaluate whether to continue the program into the spring and summer.
