City Council Asked to Consider Urban Chicken Ordinance

September 13, 2017

chicken_coop_1A request for an ordinance to permit chickens within the city limits of Plymouth was presented to the Common Council Monday evening.

Emily Seltenright lives on Williams Street and asked the council to consider adopting an Urban Chicken Ordinance similar to the one in place in South Bend.  She suggested an application process including a fee and inspection of the property prior to construction of a chicken coop.  She also suggested an annual registration fee.

Seltenright suggested only permitting 3 to 4 chickens and no roosters.

Councilman Shawn Grobe said he wasn’t sure the city should take on the possibility fearing it would open up to request for additional animals.

Chicken_Coop_2Council members didn’t make any determination and asked Seltenright to gather additional information to present at a future meeting.  They also asked to City Attorney to investigate other communities with chicken ordinances.

The request for a chicken ordinance in the city was tabled to allow for additional information.
