A public hearing on Monday, September 25 during the City of Plymouth meetings concerning a tax abatement for American Containers lasted only minutes with no comments from council or audience members. The abatement was then unanimously proved.
The City Council had declared the property to be within an Economic Development Area on September 13.
Appearing before the council was Mike Isban, president of American Containers and Nancy Tyree, communications and marketing manager of Marshall County Economic Development Corporation. Tyree explained that the MCEDC supported the tax abatement for the businesses that has had their corporate headquarters in Plymouth for more than 50 years.
Isban said, “This (abatement) will help us remain competitive in the business community.”
American Containers is in the process of completing automation updating to increase efficiency. Isban said they have already installed one new piece of equipment and a second would be delivered in ten days. The equipment costs total $533,000. Building improvements, including some inside construction to establish a climate controlled area, is expected to be $14,500.
The Council did note that abatement requests are usually considered prior to any purchases or installation; however, they proceeded with the unanimous support.
After the meeting, Isban said they now have 63-64 fulltime positions, an increase of ten jobs from a tax abatement they received some four years ago.
