The National Weather Service has issued a Hydrologic Outlook for counties in northern Indiana, including Marshall County, advising of the potential for moderate to locally heavy rainfall this week and weekend.
Numerous weather systems are expected to bring between 1 to 3 inches of rain to the area over the next week. In addition, the ground is frozen to a depth of 6 to 10 inches, which make it difficult for the water to soak into the soil. Most of the water will become runoff and lead to the potential for flooding. Areas of greatest concern are those who have had previous flooding issues due to their location, primarily those residents living in low lying areas and areas that have poor drainage.
Marshall County EMA Director Clyde Avery said, “We may also see flooding issues in ditches, creeks, as well as ponding on roads or even washouts.”
Avery is urging those with past flooding issues to take precautionary actions now prior to these storm systems arriving.
Marshall County Emergency Management Agency reminds everyone the serious dangers posed by flooding. Here are some tips to keep you safe:
- Use a NOAA All Hazards radio to stay informed about potential dangers.
- Develop a personal/family safety plan.
- Never allow children to play around high water areas, ditches, or storm drains.
- Do not drive around a barricade. Barricades are there for your protection.
- Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. The water may be much deeper than it appears because the road bed may be washed out.
- Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.
