drowning

On Sunday, July 16, at 3:23 in the afternoon the Marshall County Coroner’s Office was requested to respond to a residence located southeast of Argos, on Gumwood Road after a 911 call was received stating that two young males were pulled from Redinger Ditch.

Several juveniles were playing in and around the ditch and one of them began to struggle in the water. To rescue the victim, the juveniles formed a human chain when another juvenile fell victim to the water.

When both victims were removed from the ditch they were found to be unresponsive and not breathing.  CPR was started immediately and a 911 call was placed.  Upon arrival of Woodlawn Paramedics and Argos EMS the two victims Mahlon Martin, age 13 and his brother Kenneth Martin, age 12 were not breathing and CPR was already in progress by the subjects at the scene.  At that time, the Paramedics continued resuscitative measures for approximately 1 hour until the victims succumbed.

Assisting the Coroners’ Office were DNR Officers, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, and Argos Police & Fire.  Les Trump, Chief Deputy Coroner was assisted by Coroner John Grolich.  Autopsies are scheduled for Tuesday and the investigation continues.
