The Plymouth JV finished 4th in the Rochester JV Invitational at Round Barn Golf Club firing a 393. Sophomore Bryce Carmichael paced the JV for a second straight weekend with an 88.Six freshmen also played with three of them getting their first true rounds of the season. Andrew Himes improved 9 shots from last Saturday carding a season-low 96. Nate Hutsell also set a season low with a 101. Matthew Gerard and Hugh Smith both shot 108 in their first round of the season. Nic Bagley improved 9 shots from last week with a 109. Tristen Moyer rounded out the scoring with a 130 in his initial round.
The Plymouth Varsity 325 took home the hardware at the Goshen Invitational played at Maplecrest. The players battled blustery conditions all day! Play for the Varsity started around 12:30. As the sun warmed, the wind intensified causing higher than normal scoring conditions throughout the field. Gusts nearing 30mph were common on the back nine.
Micah Calhoun earned Medalist honors with a 77. Hudson Yoder finished T-4 with an 81. Trevor Danielson T-10 with an 83. Chapman Yoder T-12 with an 84. John Gerard T-30 with a 92.
Players fought the wind on the front nine, none of our guys could break 40. As the day would play out this was on par for all teams. The wind proved so strong players we’re selecting up or down 2-3 clubs in certain situations. This made for some interesting 300+ tee shots for some of our guys.
At the turn Trevor Danielson got hot. After chipping in for birdie on #10 he lipped out a birdie putt on #11 in his bid to go back to back. Trevor went on to play the next three holes, into the wind, in even par. A poor chip on #15 forced a dropped shot and an eventual tough finish with the wedge the closing three holes. Nonetheless, Trevor’s 83 is a new career mark that’s for sure to be beaten soon!
Playing in his first Varsity match sophomore Chapman Yoder got off to a solid start. After a double at #2 he settled into the round, got the driver working and his rhythm followed suit. On the back, he hit every fairway and 4 greens in regulation to come in 41.
Hudson Yoder had an up and down back nine. After pars at 10 & 11, a double at 12, got him agitated. He followed with a par on 13 then proceeded to eagle 14, the lone par 5 on the back, to get back to even par. Hudson’s tee shot on 15 got him in trouble and a double bogey resulted. He quickly righted the ship with a scrambling par on 16 only to drop shots at 17 and 18 coming in. Hudson’s back nine score of 39 was three shots better than his front nine. Impressive was his grit to bounce back in the windy conditions.
Micah Calhoun had a solid start going -1 through 5 holes. He was +2 heading into the par 5 9th hole when an unexplainable and excruciating lost ball situation on his fairway approach created a double bogey. Going out in 40 provided motivation to push hard on the back for birdies however none were found as a couple key putts simply didn’t find the cup. Stat-wise Micah didn’t three-putt all day which allowed him to earn Medalist on a tough scoring day.
Today’s victory was the second time in four seasons the Pilgrims have won the Goshen Invitational. The past two seasons they finished runner-up to NLC rival Northridge.
Both teams are back in action Monday when they travel to Eberhart-Petro in Mishawaka to battle the host Marian Knights and visiting Bremen Lions.
