Blueberry RecyclingThe Marshall County Blueberry Festival kicks off its 50th annual celebration this weekend and PNC Bank is teaming up again with Recycle Depot as the festival’s recycling sponsors. Since 2009, the Marshall County Recycle Depot and PNC Bank have supported recycling efforts in the festival’s trash removal strategy. To date, over 50 tons of plastic, aluminum and cardboard have been successfully diverted from the festival grounds.

Thanks to PNC’s generosity, patrons wishing to recycle will find ten additional bins throughout the Centennial Park venue. The four-day festival is expected to attract thousands of families and blueberry lovers of all ages.

“People have made it a habit to recycle at home, so now they naturally look for bins when they are in public spaces,” said Marianne Peters, director of the Marshall County Solid Waste Management District and the festival’s recycling coordinator since 2008. “We’re thrilled that PNC is helping us boost awareness for recycling and making it easy for festival patrons to be green.”

PNC’s support has also provided new recycling reminder signs throughout the venue that feature Blueberry Hank, the festival’s mascot. With additional bins and signs proclaiming the recycling effort, Peters is confident more patrons and vendors will participate in environmentally conscious waste disposal.

“PNC is committed to environmentally responsible practices and constantly looks for ways to minimize its impact on the environment,” said Corinna Ladd, PNC regional president for northern Indiana. “Assisting in a recycling initiative for a special event like this is one step toward promoting a sustainable future.”

In 2002, PNC became the first major U.S. bank to apply green building standards to all of its newly constructed or renovated retail offices. As of last year, PNC has reduced its energy consumption by 28 percent and carbon emissions by 30 percent. In 2015 and 2016, PNC invested more than $5 billion in sustainable financing, including capital for solar, wind, energy efficiency and green construction.
