WoolfingtonPLYMOUTH — For the ninth year, a group of friends will make good on a promise as the Craig Woolfington Memorial Golf Outing will take place at the Pretty Lake Golf Club on July 7 with a tee time of 11:30 a.m.

On Sept. 15, 2008, Craig Woolfington lost his battle with melanoma. Good friends Mark Lindsey and Tony Plothow promised their friend that they would be sure that Craig’s daughter Kate would go to college. Over the years, thanks to the generosity of the Plymouth community, the pair have been able to do a lot more than that in Woolfington’s name.

Initially the pair set up the golf outing as a way to raise money for Kate’s 529 college fund. Soon they had enough money to set up a fund at the Marshall County Community Foundation and continued contributing to Kate’s college career along with establishing a Craig Woolfington Memorial Scholarship awarded to a Plymouth High School graduate headed for Purdue University, and also set up the Craig Woolfington Cancer Research Fund that contributes to the cause on the Purdue campus.

“Over the year’s people have been more than generous to help us honor Craig,” said Lindsey. “This community is unique in its giving and support for any cause that they feel is helping others and everyone has been unbelievably generous to the things that we are trying to support.”

There is still room for golfers at this year’s outing that includes lunch, golf, wings, and beverages. While there’s plenty of challenge for the serious golfer, the outing is designed for fun.

“Craig loved to have a good time and that’s some of our greatest memories with him: golfing, tailgating having a good time,” said Lindsey. “Actually, if I had to describe this event it’s really part outing, part tailgate. Just a way to get out and remember Craig. And for anyone wondering, ‘The Vessel’ will be there for everybody to see.”

“The Vessel” that Lindsey refers to is the infamous converted RV that served as the group of friends’ tailgate vehicle at Purdue football games.

“We do have a few team slots left right now but they are filling up very fast,” said Lindsey. “We always try to keep the number of teams at 36 so people can play a round that doesn’t take all day.”

Those interested in signing up a four man team can contact Lindsey at 574-209-1014, or Plothow at 574-952-5632.
