“Small Wonders Challenge the Artists”

May 2, 2018
By

Heartland-Gallery-logoThe Gallery is proud to offer another juried show to the community from talented artists who enjoyed the challenge of painting, sculpting, and creating within a smaller boundary than usual, a 12 x 12” or smaller dimension. The details seem more pronounced, the color seems more intensified and the finished product is exceptional. This show will be on display at Heartland Artists Gallery from May 1 through June 2. There will be an Open House for all artists and the community on Saturday, May 5 from 1 until 4 with awards being given at 3:00. There will be one more award given at the end of the show, the Popular Choice Award.  All visitors are invited to choose their favorite and vote at the Gallery.

HeartlandArtist_SmallWonders2018_1The Gallery would like to thank all the artists who entered the juried show. The winners are as follows: Best of Show, Cathy McCormick with her pastel drawing titled ‘Napping’. First Place went to Elizabeth Wamsley with her clay sculpture titled, ‘Falling Barn I’. Second place is Lena Matlis with her photo titled ‘Milkweed’.  John Streeter received third place with his pastel called ‘Rocky Sunset’. Honorable Mention Awards were given to the following three artists; Karla Ellis for her ‘Bluebonnet Path’ in oil, Diann Nelson with her pastel, ‘Morning Pears’ and Kathleen Zentz for her fiber collage titled ‘Down the Lane’.

HeartlandArtist_SmallWonders2018_2Judge Jeffrey Diesburg from Manchester College studied and reviewed one hundred entries with a myriad of themes and media, but all were Small Wonders measuring 12 x 12’ or smaller. His comment was. “The range of value in a piece is always important, but in these smaller works contrast and indication of light is even more important. The pieces I chose make good use of the media and have a strong descriptive relationship to light”.

HeartlandArtist_SmallWonders2018_3If you want to see the show again or did not get a chance to see it in Plymouth, it will be in Warsaw in June. Lakeland Art Association will share their Spring Show at Heartland in June and our Small Wonders Show will travel to Warsaw. Small Wonders will be a part of our first Art Exchange with Lakeland Art Association.
