Lancers close with senior night win
LAKEVILLE – The varsity girl’s basketball team finished the season at home against Culver Community.
The Lancers were not affective early from the floor before settling down for a 53-38 Hoosier North Athletic Conference victory over the Cavaliers.
LaVille had just three players hit the scoring column early, while Culver hung tough. Shelfie Zeiger hit a 3-pointer, while Nina Sajdak converted for a bucket before Ashton Applegate came off the bench to give LHS a 8-6 lead to close the first quarter.
The Lancers settled down in the second quarter as Haley Berger and Lindsey Aschenbrenner hit 3-point shots to lead LaVille to a 24-13 halftime lead.
“I thought we struggled early to hit shots,” said LaVille coach Corey Duncan. “But came out in the second quarter through the rest of the game.”
As the second half progressed, Duncan was able to go deeper on the bench to get some varsity time.
“I thought it was nice to get some other player’s experience,” said Duncan. “Nina Sajdak did a good job tracking the basket. The seniors will be missed.”
Seniors on the team are Lindsey Aschenbrenner, Haley Berger, Haylie Cox, Aryn Eash, Nina Sajdak, and foreign exchange student Taylor Tan.
Eash led all scorers with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Lindsey Aschenbrenner, Haley Berger, and Nina Sajdak added eight points each. Lindsey Aschenbrenner dished out four assists and hauled in seven rebounds. Eash added four assists each and cleared the boards for six rebounds.
LaVille closes the 2017-18 regular season at 16-7 overall and 4-3 in the HNAC. The Lancers will face Westview in the Class 2A Central Noble Sectional Tuesday January 30 at 6 p.m.
Culver finishes 2017-18 at 4-17 overall and 0-7 in HNAC play. The Cavaliers drew a bye and will play the winner of South Central-Argos on Friday Feb. 2.
