Lincoln Jr. High School students Kasi Harner and Elaina McDonald were both awarded the Notre Dame Chemistry Junior award at the Northern Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair that was held recently at the University of Notre Dame. Both students were recognized for their science project they are calling, “Turn that Brown Upside Down.” The pair both studied the use of acids to prevent the oxidation of apples.
Nearly 300 students from 50 schools in Indiana came together to show off their skills in science at the annual event. The fair was for students in grades three through 12.
NIRSEF is open to schools in the counties of Elkhart, Fulton, Marshall, and St. Joseph counties. To be eligible for participation, students must have a teacher register their school through the Science Education Foundation of Indiana and select their project to move on to the NIRSEF from their Local School Fair.
Ten students will be chosen to advance to the state competition, and there are chances to win scholarships and other prizes. We will keep you posted on if Kasi and Elaina are among the ten.
