A quick Google search using this folk musician’s name reveals why Mark Dvorak is oft referred to as the Midwest’s primary herald of the American folk-music tradition– especially as it expounds the genre’s very heart— the building of community through songs and singing.   In photo after photo, Mark is pictured teaching a child, leading a church choir, blending in with a group, or hugging a grandma or baby; in short, sharing his gifts with many different people from all walks of life.

Mark’s face twinkles and sparks when he speaks—like a road-map of someone who has learned life’s wisdom from sharing his songs and stories far and wide.   His work embodies the word civitas—the responsibility humans have to be working together for the good of the community.

Whether he is presenting a song he learned from an elderly bluesman in a New Orleans’s nursing home, belting out a Woody Guthrie Classic like Deportee, or sharing his thoughts about approaching middle age, Mark’s music serves, like an ancient balm, to remind us of our brotherhood, our sisterhood, and our common good for which we are all responsible.

Mark has nine albums in circulation, a book of stories and a beautiful song called, “This Train Ain’t Bound for Glory Anymore.”  The song, like many good folk songs, is a critique that calls us all to a higher purpose, to remember what faith is for, to reboot our consciousness and make a fresh start at building a better world. It’s a song for fueling new and better beginnings.

In short, Mark Dvorak has learned how to use his gift of song to bring people together.  If you want to experience that feeling, just attend one of the three events being held at Wild Rose Moon this weekend, November 16th and 17th.  Mark will be performing a concert on Friday night at 8 p.m., doing a live radio show taping Saturday morning at 11 a.m., and performing for a Hootenanny (sing-a-long) on Saturday night at 8 p.m.    The cost of the Friday night concert is $20, the radio show $5, and the hootenanny, $10.  Tickets are available at ASK for Flowers and wildrosemoon.com
