radonRadon is a naturally occurring gas in the earth’s crust that can find its way into homes.  The Radon gas can seep into homes and build up into dangerous concentrations.  The long-term exposure is the threat to your health and being a colorless and odorless gas, it is virtually undetectable without a radon detector.  An easy way to test if your home has high levels is with a simple radon test kit.

The Marshall County Health Department is offering in-home radon testing kits for homeowners throughout the county.  Radon is a health concern being the second leading cause of lung cancer, only behind tobacco smoking.  According to the EPA, Marshall County is in Zone 1, meaning it is predicted the average indoor radon screening is above the rate at which it is considered a dangerous level (4pCi/L).MCHD has a limited supply of test kits. The test kits can be pick up at the Health Department’s office in the Community Resource Center located at 510 W. Adams Street, GL-30.  Office hours are 8:00am-4:00pm while supplies last.  If you have any questing regarding Radon please contact the Marshall County Health Department Health Educator, Jacob Baylis at 574-935-8601 or via email at jacobb@co.marshall.in.us.
