PHS Hosts Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Competition Tonight

Plymouth High School will host the 34th annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Competition tonight, Monday, October 29 at 6 p.m. The stage is already set in the PHS varsity gym for this evening’s competition. Contestants from Bremen, John Glenn, Mishawaka, New Prairie, Penn, and Plymouth will be practicing from 4-6 p.m.

Teams will be vying for a qualifying spot for the Spell Bowl State Finals on Saturday, November 10. All together close to 6,000 students from around the state will compete tonight in the 34th annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl, which will take place at 18 separate sites around the state for grades 9-12. A total of 19 separate sites around the state for grades 6 through 8 will take place tomorrow on Tuesday, October 30.

Senior division teams of 10 students each and junior division teams of eight students each will compete.

The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is a team concept with no individual winners. Each round consists of one team member writing the correct spelling of nine words while competing against one team member from each other school. Students are seated on the gym floor or auditorium stage. Each word is graded immediately, and an individual scoring chart maintains a running team score as the evening progresses. While students are waiting to compete, they sit in a cheer block to cheer for their teammates.

The top teams with the highest scores in each of the four enrollment classifications will converge on the Purdue University campus (both Senior and Junior divisions) on Saturday, November 10, 2018, for the state championship competition.

The competition is administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals, Department of Student Programs and sponsored by Purdue University.

The members of our PHS Spell Bowl team are as follows, Jessica Baca, Jessika Cuatlacuatl, Blake Edwards, Jessica Escobar, Edgar Garcia Cuatlatl, Quincey Hess, Julia Marohn, Bohanon Meadors, Jayla Mitchell, Alexa Orozco, Konnor Ray, Andy Rostron, Hugh Smith and Jennifer Torres.

There is no admission charge to come watch the Spell Bowl competition tonight at Plymouth High School, and all are welcome!

Results will be posted by noon the day after both area competitions at Hover over the Student Programs tab, then Academic Competitions, then click on Academic Spell Bowl. Teams qualifying for the Spell Bowl State Finals will be marked in BOLD type.
