Plymouth 12U Wins Weather-Shortened Game

PLYMOUTH, IN  Buzzing with excitement, the atmosphere at Ed Hess field was nothing short of electric on Wednesday night as the Plymouth 12U was set to play their home opener. This excitement would soon fade as the storms started rolling in as the Pilgrims would in time; win a weather-shortened game, 2-0.

After a quick three-up, three-down top of the first, the Pilgrims jumped all over Fairfield’s starter. Beck Magee led-off with a lazer-shot down the third-base line. After a Jak Chaney infield hit, the Pilgrims had runners at first and second with no outs. Preston Wolfe would eventually smack a 0-2 count triple into left-center-field, plating both Magee and Chaney.

“Beck Magee got us started in the top of the first with a rocket down the third base line,” said Plymouth 12U head coach Nick Chaney. “The difference tonight was Preston Wolfe’s 2-RBI triple, which capped off a nice first inning.”

Wolfe’s two RBIs were all Plymouth needed as the pitching staff dominated the Falcons. In the end, the Pilgrim pitching was the highlight, no-hitting Fairfield.  Ryan Gadziola started the game, surrendering zero runs on zero hits, walking only one, in his first win of the year. Caleb Bowling would enter in relief, striking out five of the six batters he faced, securing the combined no-hitter.

“We had strong pitching performances from both Gadziola and Bowling,” continued Chaney. “Combined they only gave up one baserunner on a walk. The really impressive thing to me was the way they battled and competed on every at-bat, especially the at-bats they got behind in the count on. They never gave up.”

Five Plymouth hitters would finish 1-for-2 as the Pilgrims collected 5-hits on seventeen plate appearances.

“It’s unfortunate that the weather hit,” concluded Chaney. “We were putting a really nice inning together in the fourth before the game was called.”

The Plymouth 12U, sponsored by Emergency Forklift Services, moved to 2-1 on the season. The Pilgrims will be back in action this Sunday at Ed Hess field, taking on Fairfield Blue at 4pm.
