High-quality childcare and prekindergarten education are vital to growing our future workforce. To meet this need, Weir Enterprises LLC, also known as Carey’s Child Care, will soon be opening a new early learning facility at 1717 Lake Avenue in Plymouth through a $500,000 expansion. Additionally, with the unemployment rate at 3.3% as of January 2018, this expansion will allow Marshall County to increase our current workforce.

Carey’s Child Care is an accredited childcare provider, owned and operated by John and Carey Weir who have been in the childcare business for over 20 years. The new facility will double the number of children served from 32 to 64, as well as the number of employees staffing the center from 5 to 10. According to Carey Weir, “We are excited to announce our new facility is registered as an On My Way Pre-K provider. This program will allow more parents to go to work and positively impact our community’s economic condition.”

Last year, Marshall County was named an On My Way Pre-K county, making prekindergarten available to low-income families. Our community is one of just 20 throughout the state to participate in this pilot program. On My Way Pre-K aims to provide a strong educational foundation for those who need it most, increasing their chances of academic and career success later in life. The new Carey’s Child Care facility will work to improve educational opportunities for our youth and strengthen our future workforce through this program.

The expansion follows a public hearing Monday night, in which the Plymouth City Council approved a tax abatement for the new facility. This hearing was the second step in the tax abatement process, the first of which occurred on February 26th when the Council designated the new location as an economic revitalization area. This 7-year, personal property tax abatement will support the planned expansion for Carey’s Child Care in Plymouth.
