TRANSPO

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly Tuesday announced a federal grant to help the South Bend Transportation Corporation (Transpo) replace 12 fixed route buses. The $4.9 million discretionary grant is funded by the Department of Transportation’s Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program.

Donnelly wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao supporting the Transpo grant in July.

Senator Donnelly said, “Hoosiers throughout South Bend and Mishawaka rely on Transpo for transportation to and from home, work, school, medical appointments, and recreation. This bus system is an asset to our community and the region’s economy, and I’m proud to have supported Transpo’s application for this grant that will help provide consistent, reliable service for the students, seniors, and families who depend on it.”

Amy Hill, Interim General Manager and CEO at South Bend TRANSPO said, “We are honored to receive funding through the Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program. The replacement of buses that have exceeded their useful life is critical to Transpo’s ability to provide the vital connections to employment, healthcare, educational and recreational opportunities that are so important our community.”

The Department of Transportation’s Buses & Bus Facilities Infrastructure Investment Program makes federal resources available to states and direct recipients to replace, rehabilitate and purchase buses and related equipment and to construct bus-related facilities.
