USAC AMSOIL National Sprint cars roar onto the Plymouth Speedway track Saturday night for their only appearance in Plymouth this year. The star studded field of regulars will attract crowds from all over, so you will want to get to the track early for good seats.
The non-wing sprints will share the night with UMP modified and Plymouth Speedway’s Thunder Stocks. Two classes of cars that race hard every time they are on the track. Don’t tell these guys it’s just a heat race.
The gates open at 4 p.m. and the racing will start at 7 p.m. Come early and tailgate with your friends.
The USAC non-wing sprint car is like none other. These cars have an off the chart power to weight ratio and without the wing they are a handful to drive. It is no accident that drivers like Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman all came up through the USAC sprint car ranks. These cars will get around the Plymouth Speedway clay in a hurry using a racing line unlike any other.
Currently Chris Windom is leading the USAC points but Kevin Thomas Jr, last weeks winner at Haubstadt, is only 5 points behind.
Last year’s winner at Plymouth Speedway, Justin Grant will be making a return trip but with a new team that is familiar to the Plymouth Speedway, TOPP Motorsports. Grant and the TOPP Motorsports team have their sights set on a national championship, currently in seventh place with a fifth place last week. TOPP will want to improve on that finish at what has to be considered their home track.
Dave Darland picked up a win last Friday night in Bloomington, becoming the first to hit 60 career wins. Darland will be adding to his 700 starts in the series.
Look for your favorite UMP modified drivers to return Saturday. Last week’s modified field was a who’s who of the series. Frank Marshall, Jamie Lomax, Zeke McKenzie, Randy Lines, just to name a few were all present and racing for the win and national points.
Rounding out the nights entertainment will be a full field of Thunder Stock cars. This group of drivers have brought some new machines to the track this year and some new faces. Close side by side racing for long green flag runs is what this class is known for.
Tickets are $25 for adults this week, children 6 to 12 are $8 and 5 and under are free. A pit pass is $35 you can see how the stars of USAC prepare their race cars.
