Miller’s Residents Experiences The Joy of Marbles

Miller's_Marbles May 2019 Yolanda and KenAnnette Ray of Bourbon has been collecting marbles for over 25 years.  She admits she loves round things and she has a great passion for all types of marbles.  She shared that passion with the residents of Miller’s Assisted Living Community in her presentation The Joy of Marbles.

Ray sent all types of marbles around the table where residents gathered to have a “hands on” experience with the marbles.  She told about Benningtons, clay, glass, carpet balls, iridescent, onionskin, sulfites, china, cats eyes, minis, steelies and of course, shooters!  The joy was apparent in the residents faces as they handled the marbles and reminisced about their childhood’s playing with marbles and “stealing” your opponents prized marbles.

The group listened intently as Ray explained how marbles are manufactured today as opposed to how they were hand formed in years gone by.  She showed how to tell the difference between cats eyes and banana peltiers and the lattice swirls and the corkscrews.

Miller's_Marbles Walter May 2019Ray admits that the value and the beauty of each marble is in the eye of the beholder.  Her favorite marbles are made of clay; yet, she does find great beauty in some of the newer, larger manufactured glass balls with intricate designs inside.  She even has several newer ones that are signed by the artist.

Miller’s residents are always interested in fun, educational, and unusual collections or hobbies that others enjoy.  If you have a passion for a particular hobby or line of work or collection and are willing to share your knowledge, please call Cindy Flagg, Activity Director at Miller’s Assisted Living at 574-936-9801  ext: #148.
