Crash investigation_VehicularA wrong way drive on U.S. 30, Saturday night is in critical condition following an accident at Redwood Road.

Deputy Ryan Hollopeter investigated the crash and according to statements and evidence at the scene, 38 year old David Kerlin of Lake Station was driving west bound in the east bound lanes on U.S. 30 in a 2004 Chevrolet Explorer van.

Ralph Babcock from Wisconsin was driving a loaded semi-tractor trailer combination east bound on U.S. 30 towards the intersection with Redwood Road when Kerlin’s van collided head on with the semi.

A third vehicle, a Chevrolet Pickup truck driven by 61 year old Alan Jones of North Liberty was also traveling east bound on U.S. 30 alongside the semi when the collision happened and was involved in the crash.

The crash investigation partially closed east bound traffic on U.S. 30 for several hours while emergency units and local wrecker companies cleaned up the roadway.  The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating this collision and it is believed that alcohol may be a factor.

David Kerlin was airlifted to Memorial of South Bend for head injuries sustained from the collision and is in critical condition at this time.   Alan Jones and Ralph Babcock refused further treatment.
