Chad Blonde of Litchfield, Mich. won the Sprints on Dirt feature from the pole, the rest of the racing action was anything but predictable at Plymouth Speedway Saturday, July 27. Lap one of the SOD feature had a third of the field collected in turn two all but the original two cars involved were able to continue.
Jay Steinebach over rotated the 10xs coming to a stop low between turns 1 and 2 collecting Vickery, Ohio’s Frank Neill while the bulk of the field went high to avoid with a handful of cars all coming to a stop close to the wall.
Once everyone was pushed off and refired the field went 25 green flag laps with Blonde setting a blistering pace. Ryan Ruhl would gain three spots to finish second while Steve Irwin would drop one to round out the podium in third.
Plymouth’s Zane Devault would finish in the fifth spot and miss hard charger by one as Michael Schumacher would collect that honor with a 7th place finish from 15th.
CSR sprints will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 3 featuring Eli Lakin and Kyle Gunkel who both took advantage of the SOD show to get some extra laps on the track.
Next up was the topsy turvy 600 mini sprint feature with fifteen non-wing cars taking to the inner bull ring. Persistence paid off for Kokomo’s Billy Briscoe has he collected his first feature win. This event not only featured a first time winner but several cars got upside down including a couple of racers that are always a threat to be on the podium Jacob Ruppe and Bruce Clay. Clay was a single car incident late in the event, while Ruppe went upside down battling for second place about midway through the event.
Andy Hall had started on the front row lead the way for 17 of the 20 laps when a charging Ed Cleveland sent it into turn three possibly looking for a slide job on Hall. The aggressive move came up short sending Hall around coming to a stop in front of Kevin Hapner ending the night for both. Cleveland was sent to the rear of the lead lap cars on the restart for his part in the incident. Briscoe held off Cody Williams and Brenton Lamb the remaining couple of laps for the top step of his first podium. Abby Hohibein would maintain her fourth place starting spot to finish just off the podium and Chad Hartzell would collect the much coveted hard charger moving eight spots from 13th to fifth.
A scary moment in the UMP Modifieds had everyone holding their breath for an incident on the main stretch just under the starters stand. The luck of the draw would have the heavy hitters of the class all starting in the first couple rows in the feature with Derek Losh on the pole and Frank Marshall beside. Bradley Jameson would start third overtaking Marshall for second just a couple laps before the leaders started picking up the tail of the field. As Jameson was working lapped traffic he was overtaking a lapped car low out of turn four. The lapped car expected the leaders to pass high, they tangled and Jameson ended up on his lid. The field was red flagged as safety personnel attended to Jameson. Time seems to stand still during these moments and Jameson emerged from the wreck seemingly unscathed.
The field restarted with Losh out front Marshall in second. Bobby Stremme would get past Matt Michell to challenge Marshall for second. The two traded positions for the final five laps of the feature running side by side. In a side by side finish only separated by 6 thousands of a second Marshall squeaked out the position over Stremme. Mike Hohibein was lurking just behind these two to finish fourth gaining five spots from his ninth place start.
Super Streets made their return to the track and Ron Wilkes made a big statement in his return picking up the heat and feature wins in the 109 Pogue Racing special. Wilkes started on the front row next to Josh Elliott on the pole. Wilkes would quickly get the lead and hold it to the checkered flag. Kody Conner went on to finish second from his third starting spot and Calvin Peek Jr. moved up to third from seventh. Hard charger was Joe Spiewak finishing in fourth from a 12th place start.
Final feature of the evening was the Thunder Stocks with Clint Hall in the 8 on the pole and Nate Payton starting along side. Payton would maintain his position finishing second with RJ Akers charging hard to his third place finish. But the Thunder car class was owned by Austen Hubbard in the 114. He won both his heat and the feature starting fourth and fifth respectively. Wade Clemmons would be a factor early in the feature until his power plant went up in smoke ending his night premature.
Saturday, Aug. 3rd will feature the UMP Modifieds, CSR Sprints, Thunder Stocks and the non-wing 600 mini-sprints. Gates will open at 4 p.m., Hot Laps starting at 6 p.m. and Racing getting underway at 7 p.m. All this excitement will be available for $13 dollars for adults, kids 6-12 are $5 and 5 and under are always free.
Ollies Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions winged sprint cars will be at the Playground of Power on Saturday, Aug. 17. This series features Tony Stewart in the 410 and several other household names. Aaron Reutzel currently leads the series over Dale Blaney and Cory Eliason. Stewart won his second A main of the season last weekend over Rico Abreu and Christopher Bell at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa.
