County News # 1Last week the Marshall County Drainage Board held a public hearing for a construction project on the Bellman Tile Arm south of Bremen.  The project was proposed for the west side of Fir Road and through the wetland area for a total of 455 feet. Estimated cost is $35,650 with an estimated cost per benefit acre of $564.

The petition was signed by Donald and Janet Reed.  Their estimated cost for the construction project for nearly 30 acres is just over $16,500.  Reed said he’s been having water problems with the water backing up more and more.

Keith Roeder and signed the petition for construction and will pay over $1,600 for the benefit.

There were two letters of objection and one person at the meeting opposed to the project.  Mark Sahlhoff who’s portion would be just over $1,400 said the expense was the biggest issue.  Sahlhoff’s mother’s property, also in the watershed would pay $12,223 for the 21 plus acres that would benefit from the project.   He asked why the route was through the wetland which raises the cost of the project.  He also asked if it could be a community drain which would lower the cost.

County Surveyor Craig Cultice told the concerned citizens he estimates high and when the project is actually bid they will have a better idea of the real cost.

The County Drainage Board unanimously accepted the petition and will have the project set for bid.
